Swindon rattled up a convincing 39-19 victory over lowly Oxford in Saturday's Southern Counties North encounter.

From the first whistle, the visitors' forwards dominated and the first score came from an Oxford lineout.

Andy Prowse rose high to steal an Oxford ball and tapped down to skipper Andy Morley who surged forward. Scrum-half Jimmer Courtney then fed winger Chris Lawrence to score in the corner.

Swindon's lead was extended by a Neil Maycock penalty and they continued to dominate in all areas.

Sustained pressure on the Oxford line eventually told as a five -metre scrum was won against the head by Swindon, Morley going over after No 8 Ian Reynolds had been stopped short.

Maycock added the conversion to increase the gap to 15-0 but the visitors then suffered a setback as Paul Wakefield was forced off with a slight hamstring pull.

Swindon seemed to relax for a short period and allowed Oxford to run the ball, their full-back going over in the corner.

Swindon replied close to half-time with a second score for winger Lawrence.

After the break Oxford had the better of the first 10 minutes and closed the gap to 20-12 with a converted try.

The following 30 minutes, though, saw some excellent running rugby, with Jeff Sanders and Maycock making some cutting breaks.

When Sanders went close, Paul Daniels was in support and he, Morley and Mark Saunders enabled Prowse to clinch another touchdown. Maycock added the conversion for a 27-12 lead.

It wasn't long before Lawrence went over to complete a hat-trick and the next score came from another break by Maycock. A ell-timed pass back inside saw second row Prowse go over under the posts for his second, Maycock's conversion completing Swindon's scoring. Prowse was denied a hat-trick though as a later effort was adjudged not grounded.

Cirencester stayed joint top of the Gloucestershire Premier Division after holding joint leaders Spartans to a 13-13 draw at their Gloucester ground.
