Wootton Bassett defeated Ivel Barbarians 58-3 on Saturday to move back into the promotion picture in Southern Counties South.

Bassett scored 29 points in each half against a poor Barbarians outfit to move into third place in the table.

Bassett started strongly but it was Ivel who took the lead from a penalty after 15 minutes.

However, Bassett replied almost straight from therestart from a lineout five metres out, prop Dave 'Biffer' Mason with the touchdown.

Mason went over again soon after, this time ripping the ball from a maul and sprinting 20 metres to score.

Then, after a good break from centre Lee Davies, winger Craig Smith was put away to round his opposite number and score in the corner, which young wing David Parker converted from the touchline.

Just before the break, Bassett scored two quick tries, the first from Davies, converted by Parker and the second from hooker Andrew Lock.

Bassett started the second half as they left the first with scrum-half Mike Weeks going over after some good work by the pack.

Ivel then missed touch with a clearance kick from within their own 22, Bassett's full-back Simon Cady collected and set off before releasing winger Smith for the touchdown.

Bassett totally dominated the last quarter and scored three more tries through Davies, captain and No 8 Ian Tiny Mclellan, and Parker, who also converted another.

Corsham despatched Devizes 18-10 in Southern Counties South at their Lacock Road ground.

Leading 8-5 at the break, through a Tom Sandell try and Rory Auld penalty, the home side went on to win courtesy of a Roy Hewett try and another five points from the boot of Auld.
