One of the world's leading scientists will be delivering the annual Christmas Lecture at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution next month.

Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal and Royal Society Research Professor at Cambridge University, will be the guest speaker at the Institution's fourth Christmas address.

As part of a joint venture with the city's Herschel Society, Sir Martin, who is the best-selling author of Our Cosmic Habitat and this year's winner of the 2001 Cosmology Prize, will be giving a talk entitled The Beginning and End of the Universe.

Sir Martin is one of science's top astrophysicists and is a leader in the quest to better understand black holes, quasars, gamma-ray bursts and galaxy formation.

Although all advance tickets for the night have been allocated, 30 seats have been reserved for sale at the door on a first come, first served basis.

Said Victor Suchard, who has organised Sir Martin's visit: "He's probably the world's leading astronomer and I'm delighted with the response we've had."

The lecture takes place on Friday, December 16, starting at 7.30pm at 16 Queen Square, Bath. For further details, ring (01225) 312084.
