ELDERLY residents in Oldfield Park say they are devastated by the closure of the district's last fish and chip shop.

Former customers of the Ancient Mariner in Moorland Road say they don't know where to get their supper now the chippy has shut its doors after more than 25 years in business.

Since shutting down its fryers in October, pensioners wanting their favourite supper have had to try to arrange transport to either Twerton or Southdown for the nearest cod and chips. And for many retired people, the journey presents real problems.

"I've got to walk from Bellots Road to Twerton to get my chips now," said Mr John Perdicchia, 70. "I manage, yes, but it takes me a long time. So I do hope a local chip shop opens soon."

Jean Bone, 70, of Third Avenue, who used to get her fish and chips at least once a week from the much-loved chippy agreed. She said: "I wouldn't want to travel to another fish bar as it's not convenient. I think a lot of people feel very bad that it has closed down. Oldfield Park is a very close-knit community and everyone is saying it is a shame."

Several residents believe the closure of the fish bar has left them with no other choice of take-out food, despite other takeaways in the neighbourhood.

Mr Percy Rose, 75, of West Avenue, said: "I'm not interested in other kinds of food like all the foreign takeaways. Old people here will miss it, especially on a Friday as that was the main day for fish and chips. I can't get around so easily these days so it is naughty closing it down."

It was a stance supported by Margaret Burrows, 72, of Triangle West. She said: "It is a pity. I don't like some other foods you can buy on Moorland Road, and I wouldn't like to have to travel for my fish and chips. I would much rather have it here."

Local traders agree the shop's closure will have a huge impact on the neighbourhood's aged population.

Chairman of Moorland Road Traders Association Barry Cruse said: "It was perfect for the elderly and its loss has upset the balance of shops.

"Ideally, what we need is another fish and chip shop in the same site. There are good takeaways in the area that offer good service and value for money, but the elderly prefer fish and chips."

Local shopkeeper Spike Barnes, who owns a chain of fish and chip shops across Bath, has expressed an interest in opening in the area if he can find a suitable site.
