Your correspondent Trevor Hancock (14/11) asserts that on examining the facts the Christian religion will be found reasonable, worthy of individual faith, and morally unimpeachable.

Such a claim is difficult to equate with the facts of history. It was fanatical Christians who slaughtered and persecuted thousands of innocents, eg witches, heretics and Jews, from the fourth century to the French Revolution.

Where was morally inspired conscience then?
