WHEN Council Tax replaced the Poll Tax the Government made provision for a 25 per cent discount for people living on their own whatever the size of their property.
But many pensioners who live on their own find it extremely difficult to pay even the reduced amount, especially those whose income has fallen following the death of their partner.
These men and women do not meet the criteria for council tax benefit or income support, probably because they have a small private pension, for which they have paid over the years, in addition to their State pension.
The Bedford Association of Senior Citizens is campaigning nationwide for the Government to introduce a single occupancy discount which they believe would be a fairer way of charging, pointing out that the money saved could be used to pay for home maintenance and expensive eye and dental costs.
The Association suggests using the property category bands as the means of regulating the discount bands A and B 50 per cent, Band C 45 per cent, band D 40 per cent, band E 30 per cent, bands F, G and H 25 per cent.
If this affects you or someone you know please write to your MP at the House of Commons, London SW1A 1AA asking them to commission a report and publish the proposals. If you would like to be active in the campaign contact Peter Brooks, 38, Mallard Hill, Bedford MK41 7QR or ring 01234 212561.
