MIRIAM Horton may be 93 but she doesn't believe in taking it easy. She swims for an hour twice each week, can do handstands and enjoys yoga, and is now planning a 5km fun run

Mrs Horton, who is the event's oldest entrant, will be wearing number 93 when she joins 100 other competitors under starters' orders in the Springfield fun run on December 30 in Corsham.

"I suppose I shall be terrified and a lot of things will be down to whether I have my friends there to boost me up and my daughter to hold me up," said Mrs Horton, of Middle Hill, near Box.

The sprightly pensioner said she has been swimming two hours a week at Springfield Leisure Centre in Corsham for ten years and used to go to yoga classes in Bath until last year.

"I still do handstands and yoga, and exercise each day, walking my dog," said Mrs Horton, who lives with her daughter Elizabeth, 57, and her husband Martin. Husband Harry died in 1985. "The people at Corsham baths asked if I would start the fun run and it's gone from there," added Mrs Horton.

"I shall do my best but I shan't run it. I will walk at least part of it but don't know if I will finish it,"she said.

The fun run has been organised by Springfield Leisure Centre and starts at 11am in the fields behind the centre. All money raised will go to local charities. Entry forms are available from the centre but runners can enter up to 10.30am on the day.
