FEATURE: CIVILIAN workers Caroline Steel and Tina Muskett insist they are not attempting to be police officers.
But their new pioneering role is an essential part of Wiltshire Police's strategy to maintain a high profile in rural areas.
They have the power to make citizen arrests, as does every member of the public.
But their main job will be to take details of minor crimes and road traffic accidents and pass them on to officers at Highworth Police Station.
They also want to carry out some positive public relations for the police and pass information and advice to the public.
Caroline, 39, a former police officer, said: "We will be the first point of contact between the public and the police.
We are not there just to report crimes but will be offering assistance and information, and dealing with inquiries of a general nature.
"If we can't help immediately then we will be able to find out back at the station, or put people in touch with other services such as Swindon Borough Council."
Tina, 30, who is a mother of two, is excited about the new venture.
She said: "The hours fit in really well with my children's schooling.
They're eight and six and quite excited about the police car.
"I think they picture me dressed in a proper uniform."
The new recruits will be dressed in navy blue.
It is not so much a uniform as smart work clothing, which they think will make for a more relaxed and informal appeal.
The women are keen to be called by their Christian names as they mix with the community and are eager to make people feel at ease.
Removing public fear of approaching the police is one of their main aims. If their friendly open manner is anything to go by, it seems the police force has picked the right candidates.
The Ford Galaxy will be easily recognised by locals as it is a fully marked vehicle, equipped with radios, a desk and informative literature such as crime prevention leaflets.
The women are keen to emphasize that the mobile unit will not replace the traditional role of police officers within the villages.
They will still be patrolled in the same way, but the new scheme will tackle the more minor inquiries, freeing up police time to respond to other emergencies.
The project is due to run for 12 months and will then be reviewed.
