A BOOK of farming stories compiled by a Malmesbury writer has raised almost £9,000 to help needy farmers in the six weeks since it went on sale.
The book, titled Soft Rain for the Fields, was compiled by Kay Gardner, of Pinkney, in Malmesbury, and contains 36 stories about dogs, fishing, hunting and shooting and a host of other rural subjects.
The stories have been written by farmers and huntsmen throughout the country. In six weeks the book has sold 900 copies and raised the £9,000 through Gift Aid and match funding from the Government.
The money has been donated to the ARC Addington Fund, which supports farmers, and Mrs Gardner said she is eventually hoping to raise £15,000.
"I never dreamt it would raise as much as it has," said Mrs Gardner, who has sold the book from her home. It has also been sold by farmers, businesses and churches.
Mrs Gardner is a keen supporter of the Beaufort Hunt and said she was inspired to compile a book after seeing the problems experienced by farmers during the foot and mouth outbreak.
"I was so upset and frustrated not being able to do anything to help during the crisis," added Mrs Gardner.
"I have received a terrific amount of stuff and I hope the amount I have raised has been enough to help people."
She advertised for stories in the shooting, fishing, hunting and farming press. The book can be ordered from Mrs Gardner at Querns Piece Cottage, Pinkney, Malmesbury, SN16 OPA, priced at £8, including postage and packing.
