PUPILS at Sherston School have been awarded a £2,600 National Lottery grant to create a giant textile wall hanging.

The school has been given the grant as part of the latest round of Awards for All National Lottery Grants.

The money will pay for textile artist Heather Miles, who lives in Sherston, to spend the Spring term, starting in January, working with different groups of children creating a wall hanging that depicts the atmosphere of the school.

She said the wall hanging will be up to 8ft long.

"It is to represent the life of the school and all the activities and interests of the children, and what goes on inside and outside the school," said Mrs Miles, who helped draw up the grant bid with the Friends of Sherston School and head teacher, Nick Bowditch.

"The ideas that we put into the wall hanging will all come from the children," she said.

"The types of things I expect it will show include aspects of the games in the playground, sports they play on the field, and pictures of younger children waiting for their brothers and sisters outside the gates."

Mrs Miles said she will also be running adults' textile classes at the school.

The Little Somerford Short Mat Bowls Club was also handed a £646 lottery grant, which will be spent on a short mat rolling and storage machine.

"We are absolutely delighted with the grant," said treasurer Paola Meekins.

"It will make such a difference to us and hopefully bring in new members," she added.
