WILTS SENIOR CUP: STRIKER Craig Wall scored four times as Pewsey Vale demolished Wiltshire League neighbours Marlborough in their first round Wiltshire Senior Cup clash at Elcot Lane on Saturday 17 November.
The Hellenic League Division One side proved too strong for their hosts and went ahead on 12 minutes when Mick McNally threaded a ball through for Wall to bag his first of the afternoon.
Richard Jackson brought Marlborough level midway through the half he raced onto a long ball to slot the ball past advancing Vale goalkeeper John Haines.
But their joy was shortlived and Paul Day continued his fine goalscoring run since arriving from Hungerford Town last month when he pounced to give the visitors the lead for the second time.
Wall scored his second to move Pewsey two in front by the interval and they ran riot in the second period with five further goals .
Darren Cummings weighed in with a second half brace, while Wall netted twice more to bring his tally for the match to four. Young striker Ross Anderson rounded off the scoring for the visitors.
Pewsey manager Don Rogers was pleased with the way his side responded following last week's disappointing league defeat at the hands of struggling Easington Sports.
He said: "It was a very one-sided game and, in fact, we could have had a few more goals as we missed a few chances.
"I must admit I expected us to win comfortably but not by that margin. To give Marlborough credit, they battled to the end and kept going.
"But we played some good football and I actually enjoyed it. You can't really complain, eight is a lot of goals."
Four-goal hero Wall has recently returned from Army service in Oman and Rogers is glad to have him back after some impressive displays at the end of last season.
He said: "Craig Wall was buzzing around them all game. He is the sort of player who always wants to score goals, no matter how many he has got."
Pewsey travel to Reading-based outfit Mortimer in the first round of the Hungerford Cup tonight and return to league action at home to bottom-of-the-table Letcombe on Saturday.
Said Rogers: "I will be very upset if we don't beat them. Our main priority at the start of the season was the league and that hasn't changed."
WROUGHTON goalkeeper keeper Simon Lowe earned his side a place in the second round when he saved a couple of penalties in a shoot-out with Trowbridge Town after the two sides were level at 2-2 after extra-time.
In a closely-fought tie, Glenn Armstrong gave Wroughton the lead after 20 minutes, Trowbridge equalising a minute later. The score remained until the first period of extra-time when Sean Clarke put Wroughton ahead again only for the visitors to draw level in the closing stages.
It was then that Wroughton keeper Lowe earned his corn making a couple of good stops to soothe manager Chris Pethick's nerves.
Stratton Crosslink also made it to the second round of the competition with a 4-1 win over Aldbourne. Two goals in the first 20 minutes from Darren Hawkins put Crosslink on the road to victory, Nick O'Dwyer pulling a goal back for Aldbourne on the half hour. After the break second half goals from Jerry Wright and Steve Shaw made sure of victory for Crosslink.
Marlborough Town found Hellenic League Pewsey Vale too strong for them in their first round tie, losing 8-1. Pewsey took an early lead through Craig Wall, Richard Jackson equalising for the home side midway through the half.
The visitors then scored two further goals before the break and completely dominated the second half scoring a further five goals. On target for Pewsey were Craig Wall (4), Darren Cummings (2), Ross Anderson and Paul Day.
Bradford Town almost caused an upset just losing out 4-3 to Hellenic League Malmesbury Vics after extra-time.
After 90 minutes the sides were level at 2-2, with Steve Roddy and Charlie Powell on target for Bradford and Stuart Greatwood and Alan Griffin for the Vics.
Robbie Simmonds gave Bradford the lead in the first period of extra-time but the Vics fought back to level the scores with a strike from Andy Sandall, the same player scoring Malmesbury's winner from the penalty spot in the closing minutes.
