ALCOHOLIC Declan McGettigan was arrested after the stolen car he was travelling in was spotted on Great Western Way.

The 46-year-old, who is also addicted to methadone, was in the passenger seat of a red Austin Metro which was stolen from Inglesham Drive, Penhill, on October 27, magistrates heard yesterday (Wednesday). The Metro was spotted by officers in a patrol car close to the Bruce Street Bridges on Great Western Way.

He said McGettigan was the front seat passenger and when he was questioned he said he couldn't recall anything because of his alcohol and methadone dependency.

The driver of the car, Roger Beasley, was jailed at an earlier hearing after admitting drink driving, aggravated taking without consent and driving while disqualified.

McGettigan, of Inglesham Road, pleaded guilty to allowing himself to be carried in a vehicle involved in an aggravated taking without consent.

Magistrates put him on a one year conditional discharge and ordered he pay £45 towards the costs of the prosecution.
