Jean Saunders misquotes my comments on the ramifications of the EU Recycling Directive.
The real issue is that they come without discussion or awareness to the general population and are imposed by Brussels.
She should reread the original Adver article on fridge recycling which is going to cost the council £500,000 and probably her own local council the same amount.
For I doubt the majority of Adver readers had any idea that this directive was coming, and the cost to local taxpayers it would incur.
The laudable aim, "that it is only right that those who are responsible for creating waste should pay for recycling and try to recycle, re-use and make longer lasting products" has very real results to long suffering council tax payers.
It will drastically increase council tax in the next few years, for it is very unlikely that central Government will stump up more money to fund it.
She says I bemoan the fact that Rover might have to spend £100 million to recycle cars.
Well this cost has a major impact on whether businesses survive, and these costs are passed onto consumers.
The EU has also published plans to ban all cars over 10 years of age from the road.
And is she in favour of this measure, which will hit very many low income families.
It has been announced that the UK faces fines of £500,000 a day unless it starts recycling more household waste.
The fines could be imposed after 2010.
But where I disagree from Ms Saunders is that I think it should be by education and consultation.
And not, as she seems to prefer, by diktat and compulsion.
