A PRIMARY school in Melksham which has been without a crossing patrol for three years is appealing for an explanation.

Local county councillor Terry Chivers has written to Wiltshire County Council's education chief Bob Wolfson about the situation at Shaw School.

Cllr Chivers said: "It would seem the county council have done nothing to fill this post. You then have to ask how many other posts are unfilled and what is being done about it.

"With more and more cars on the road these crossing patrols play a very important role in the safety of our children."

Councillor Angie Barker, a former governor of Shaw School, said if posts could not be filled then the council should be looking at providing a crossing for the children's safety.

However, the county council said it was the responsibility of individual schools to appoint people, even though it paid the wages.

But it did add that it was happy to monitor traffic and pedestrians to see if a patroller was still needed.

Alison Lawrence, county educational support manager, said: "If a patroller is appropriate, the school would welcome any applicants."
