NEW legislation could allow Wiltshire pubs to have late night drinking on Sundays.
The Government has changed the law in the last 12 months, which could mean drinking hours are extended until 12.30am on Monday mornings and up to 2am if the next day is a bank holiday.
Warminster town councillors recommended refusal of the proposal in their area on Monday night, but West Wiltshire District Council will make the final decision.
It is intending to allow premises with a public entertainment licence to stay open until midnight on Sundays and 2am on a holiday weekend.
Town councillor David Lovell said: "The proposal would affect the silent majority. A minority of people would drink into the early hours of Monday morning, while the silent majority enjoy the peace and quiet in their own homes."
Cllr John Syme supported the proposal and said attitudes had changed, and Sunday was no different to any other day.
Cllr Paul Batchelor said: "We are trying to liven up the town centre, but who in their right mind would want to live in the town if this is allowed? People would be disturbed after 2am, as there is drinking up time and walking home time."
Despite the concerns, Cllr Bob Adam said it was nothing more than a paper exercise.
He said: "If the Home Office wants extended drinking hours they will get them full stop."
