AFTER gruelling hikes, 10 boys from the 1st Bradford on Avon scout group received their Chief Scout Challenge award on Monday night (November 19) from the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire and Chief Scout, Lt-Genl Sir Maurice Johnston.

The boys were split into two groups in July; one travelled to southern Ireland for a hike in the mountains and the other walked the London Marathon route.

As well as admiring the scenery during the three-day trips, the scouts had to complete logbooks and prepare for a presentation.

Tony Moth, the group scout leader, said: "Initially plans were affected by foot-and-mouth disease, so the Ireland group had to learn about the disease.

The London group had to find out more about the marathon."

Scout commissioner Steve Chandler, Bradford on Avon mayor Janet Repton and parents and teachers joined Sir Maurice Johnston on Monday night .

Mr Moth said: "Now they are working towards the Chief Scout Award."
