SWINDON will be one of the towns along the route of a marathon baton relay to mark the launch of the 17th Commonwealth Games and honour the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The relay will begin its epic journey from Buckingham Palace in London on Commonwealth Day, March 11 2002. It will travel to 20 Commonwealth countries, before returning to the UK on 6 June 2002.

The baton will then be passed by hand between 5,000 runners as it winds its way through Northern Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man, The Channel Islands, Wales and England for 50 days, passing through hundreds of towns and villages, including Swindon on June 17.

The 17th Commonwealth Games will be held in Manchester from July 25 to August 4, 2002.

It promises to be the biggest multi-sport event ever to take place in the country.

Organisers are taking names of community figures who can be nominated as Jubilee Runners to help carry the torch a short distance.
