WILTSHIRE'S under 14 girls became the Western Region chess champions at the fourth time of trying at Headlands School, Swindon, at the weekend.
The six-girl team won by a convincing three point margin from their old rivals, Oxfordshire. Last year the two teams tied, but Oxford took the trophy on tiebreak.
This time, the Wiltshire girls all from Swindon made no mistake. With a half point lead after two rounds, they scored 100 per cent in the final round to ensure victory.
It was an all round effort, with three girls Kirsty Lafferty, 12, and Sarah Thomas, 11, both of Ridgeway, and Sarah Fitch, 11, of Commonweal, all scoring the maximum three points, and the other three, Sarah's twin sister, Nicola, on top board, captain Edith Glennie, and Rachel Fitch, both 13 and from Commonweal, all won two of their three games.
The team will now go on to the national finals in London in the summer to challenge the champions from four other regions.
