Wrexham'S high profile exit from the FA Cup at Hereford simply added to an already miserable campaign for the Welsh outfit.

Brian Flynn's 12-year reign at the Racecourse Ground ended early in the campaign when he felt he had taken the club as far as he could.

His decision was made easier as Wrexham had won only one of their first 10 games. Former Sunderland, West Brom and Oxford boss Denis Smith was appointed and the change paid immediate dividends.

Wrexham won three of their next four games, lifting hopes of escaping the relegation zone.

But the Smith effect was only temporary. Wrexham embarked on a six match losing run.

A run of defeats, which included a 5-1 thrashing at Huddersfield, was halted by a 2-0 win at Cambridge last week, but the defeats resumed with Saturday's

1-0 home reverse at the hands of Stoke City.

Goals have been a problem for Wrexham in recent games. Smith's men have scored just five in their last seven games (still better than Town's record) although reports from north Wales suggest Wrexham were unlucky to end the Stoke match with nothing.

Former Manchester United and Wolves midfielder Darren Ferguson missed a penalty on Saturday, but he remains the driving force in the Wrexham side.

Goals should not really be a problem as Wrexham boast two of the division's highly-rated strikers.

Top scorer Craig Faulconbridge (eight goals in all competitions) has attracted interest from several top sides.

Strike partner Lee Trundle was recruited from non-League Rhyl and has netted five so far this season.

The Racecourse Ground is also home to internationals.

Indeed, it was international commitments that led to the original fixture being postponed.

Trinidad and Tobago striker Hector Sam poses a threat up front, although he has only netted once so far this year.

Closer to home, midfielder Stephen Thomas has represented Wales at Under-21 level.

Denis Smith can call on experience at the back, despite Wrexham having conceded 43 goals so far by far the leakiest defence in the division.

Former Blackburn defender Keith Hill is on loan from Cheltenham Town, while former Leeds United left back Kevin Sharp arrived from Wigan earlier this month.

Former Town loan man Jim Whitley arrived from Manchester City after an on-off signing saga.
