IT is hard to imagine what went through the minds of those motorists who pushed their way through the wreckage of a fatal crash on the M4.

Probably that they did not want to be late for their next appointment.

Perhaps it is a sign of the times of the pressures that today's society places on people when wasted time means wasted money.

But today we hope that the drivers who did not stop to help get to hear the coroner's comments of his disbelief at their behaviour. And we hope they are thoroughly ashamed.

Their actions put other motorists at risks.

Far worse, they showed an utter lack of thought and respect to a young driver who was lying dying on the road just a few yards from where they passed through.

What a shame they could not be traced so that they could be forced to stand before the coroner's court to apologise for their actions.

Finally, it is worth sparing a thought for the driver of the paint lorry, Steven Knight.

He has been open to much ridicule after being involved in this accident last November and another in February just a few miles away on the M4.

But yesterday he was rightly praised for his efforts in calling the emergency services and helping at the scene. He did everything he possibly could to save Davy Dierckx.

His commendable actions contrast with the selfishness of others who chose to ignore the needs of others.
