ROY EVANS believes his team of youngsters are learning some valuable football lessons as they grow up together.

The director of football joked that he only wished his players would 'do as they're told' after Town conceded a sloppy goal in last night's 3-1 win over Wrexham.

Evans' only complaint was that Town gave their visitors a chance to get back into the game when the door should have been firmly shut.

But the Town boss was delighted to see his side build on Saturday's impressive draw with Brighton and pick up three points against Denis Smith's side.

Victory lifted Town into 15th place and back into the relatively safety of mid-table.

He said: "They are a young side and still trying to find out what this game is about. But they're learning and will carry on learning.

"This was an important match and it was good to get back to winning ways."

One youngster Evans had no reason to lecture was central defender Matt Heywood, scorer of Town's third.

He said: "Matty has now scored a couple of goals for us in recent games.

"I hope he scores a few more. He's big enough and should be aggressive in the box."

Heywood himself knows his footballing education is not yet complete but his second half strike helped settle Town nerves on the pitch and in the stands.

He said: "It was a scrappy goal but it killed the game off, a bit like the one that I got against Hartlepool.

"I don't think some of the lads in the stand are too happy with me. They seem to get good odds on me scoring the first and I keep scoring the third.

"But we have to keep going and hopefully we'll put a run together and start climbing the table."

It was a night of double celebration for the club as Town's youth team marched into the third round of the FA Youth Cup after a 3-0 win at Yeovil.
