GREEN-FINGERED gardeners from Kington St Michael School have been taking part in a village project to grow a Millennium wood.

The wood was planted last year as a community effort, and last week pupils planted an extra two trees, donated to them by the Friends of Kington St Michael School.

Some also planted oak saplings which they had grown themselves from seed.

The tree planting had previously been cancelled because of Foot and Mouth, so the youngsters had to wait until this planting season.

The school's administration officer Hilary Leek said: "The school is an important part of the village and we like to try and get involved in things like this.

"This was about getting a community project off the ground.

"They have had to wait quite a long time to actually get them planted and they all had a really good day."

Class Two were accompanied by their teacher Lisa Penfold and chairman of the Friends Heather Baker.

Mrs Baker said: "The children got very involved in the project."
