Dr Martens League: On-loan Yeovil Town striker James Bent scored twice as Chippenham Town completed a quick league double over lowly Redditch United.

Bent scored either side of the half time interval to keep the Bluebirds flying high at the top of the Dr Martens League Western Division with their second success over the midlands side in little more than a month.

Tommy Saunders' table topping side had to come from behind to earn their seventh win in five league matches, but Bent's double and a second half Steve Tweddle strike kept them at the summit despite wins for promotion rivals Clevedon Town and Solihull Borough.

Chippenham assistant manager Colin Bush was delighted with the manner of his side's victory, which made it a miserable first game in charge for newly-appointed Redditch boss Rod Brown.

Said Bush: "It was a very good performance. They were very strong in the first half, inspired by their new manager, and their performance belied their league position.

"They scored and took the lead, which obviously gave them a boost, but you have to go to these places and tough it out. It only emphasises the fact there are no easy games in this league.

"Five minutes before half time James Bent took a rollicking from Thomas but responded in exactly the right way by sticking the ball past the keeper and I felt we went on to take control of the second half.

"It was our type of game, very aggressive, very quick, and we did what we are good at. We overcame their enthusiasm to stamp ourselves on the game in the second half."

Bush felt defender Shane Andrews' miraculous goal-line clearance with the Bluebirds a goal down proved to be a key moment.

He said: "It was a magnificent clearance. He came steaming in from somewhere and didn't give up. That kept it at 1-0 and we had the bonus of equalising before half-time.

"The clearance was very important and gave us a base to go from. It reminded me of Lea James' clearance off the line at Bedlington in the Vase. We went in at 1-1 and the rest is history."

Chippenham lined up with the same starting 11 that took the club to the top for the first time with victory over Bilston Town the week before.

They were given an early shock when Michael Campbell raced onto a Lee Knight clearance to give Redditch the lead on 12 minutes.

The hosts continued to take the game to their high-flying visitors with Paul Danks a constant menace for the Bluebirds back line.

Danks should have doubled the Redditch lead a minute before the break when after rounding Dave Mogg, but his goalbound effort was superbly cleared off the line by Andrews.

Boosted by the let-off, the Bluebirds were level in first half stoppage time when Scott Colcombe's miskick fell at the feet of Bent and the red-hot striker fired home his eighth goal since joining Chippenham in early October.

The striker put the visitors in front for the first time two minutes after the break when he collected a long clearance and scored with a fine effort from 25-yards.

And Bent's strike partner Steve Tweddle made sure of maximum points 16 minutes later when he capitalised on a defensive mistake to score with ease.

Tweddle might have increased the advantage late on, but was narrowly off-target with two long range efforts.

Assistant manager Bush was pleased his side had consolidated their position at the summit of the Western Division.

He said: "It was very nice not to be a one-week wonder. We didn't want to be top just for a few days, we wanted to stay there.

"The first thing we looked at was to avoid relegation, but we now just have to keep on playing the best we can and see where we are at the end."

The Bluebirds, whose credentials faced a huge test at home to third placed Clevedon Town last night, travel to Staffordshire to face Rochester on Saturday, December 2.
