SWINDON TOWN'S dwindling bank account would be in grave danger of drying up altogether if Premiership Two be-comes a reality.
Football bosses have played down the idea but I am a great believer in the 'no smoke without fire' theory.
Quite simply, Swindon Town could not afford to hang around in Division Two if the idea ever became reality.
The gulf in money terms between the Premiership and Division One is already a yawning chasm.
But the gulf between One and Two is also growing.
There are enough semi-glamorous clubs in Division One to tempt television companies to screen numerous matches.
Strangely enough, they don't seem quite as keen to put out Bury versus Chesterfield.
The creation of Premiership Two will kill the lower leagues. Of course, loyal fans will remain loyal, but the fairweather supporters will drift away. The fact is that football is a dog-eat dog business. League chairman talk about 'looking after the smaller clubs' but really it's survival of the fittest.
The big clubs have all the power and they are only interested in swelling their own coffers.
You then have a second tier of clubs the Wolves, Coventry Citys and Manchester Citys.
Would they really care about the damage caused to the Swindon Towns of this world if Premiership Two became a reality?
It's a vicious circle. The only way you don't get left behind is to be in the top two divisions. You need to spend to get there (Rotherham apart) but without going bust in the first place.
It's a gamble. If you spend and succeed then congratulations. If you fail, then start to shudder.
Town achieved the dream in 1993. But trying to recapture the magic following relegation proved costly in more ways than one.
The Premiership is the mecca. Don't devalue it by bringing in an also-rans league alongside it.
