LEE Bampfield, of Cricklade, will be spending his birthday playing cricket in the Caribbean after he was picked to represent the Army in his favourite sport.
Private Bampfield, 19, who is a member of the Territorial Army's 395 Air Despatch Troop based at RAF Lyneham, left for Barbados last week, and when he turns 20 next week, he is likely to be sunning himself on a beach, miles away from chilly Wiltshire.
Pte Bampfield was picked to represent the Army's prestigious Five Division on their latest cricket tour.
At selection three weeks ago he bowled out the opening batsman and won his place on the tour.
"It is a great honour to represent both the Air Despatch fraternity and Five division on this tour," he said.
"Only the TA could offer me such amazing opportunities as this.
"We spent our annual camp in France last month and now I'm off to Barbados."
The troop's commanding officer, Alastair Macartney, said: "This is a great opportunity for Pte Bampfield and we wish him the best of luck.
"We try to encourage the sporting and adventurous training side of life when we're not air dispatching."
The troop still has vacancies for air dispatchers and is in particular need of clerical support.
TA members are paid for their hobby and all training is provided.
