OLD TOWN is today beginning the final countdown to the switch-on of its Christmas lights.

Dancers, singers and street entertainers are set to converge on Swindon's oldest district for a celebration this evening.

The party is scheduled to begin at 6pm with the antics of Robbo the Clown. The lights are set to be switched on an hour later.

Event co-ordinator, Harry Bromley, said: "The lights are enormously important for Old Town as both a community and a business centre.

"These lights are Old Town's contribution to Swindon as a whole, and we realise that, without the lights, Old Town would be a dull place. Each year, we seek to make the illuminations larger and more attractive than ever.

"The lights also stretch down Victoria Road as a symbol of Old Town linking with New Town there is only one town, not two."

Backers of the lights include the Evening Advertiser, whose sponsorship will cover the cost of powering them.

Other businesses, ranging from giants such as Intel to small shops, have also dug into their funds to help the project.

Deputy Mayor Stan Pajak will switch on the lights, following a 10-second countdown by town crier Fred Ferris.

Performers lined up to add to the festive atmosphere included stars of the Cinderella pantomime at the Wyvern Theatre, the Tanwood Dancers, Swindon Male Voice Choir, fun band The Locomotion and fire jugglers Crazy Waiters and the Raving Lunies.

At 7.05pm, Father Christmas is scheduled to arrive on his sleigh, ready to hand out chocolates and other gifts.

The illuminations have been installed on the instructions of the Old Town Business and Professional Association.

The organisation must still raise £2,500 to maintain and service the lights.
