CHRISTMAS shoppers are being warned to be wary of fake and potentially dangerous designer goods following the seizure of 380 allegedly counterfeit items from a private address in the town.
A Swindon man is assisting trading standards officers with their inquiries after the haul of clothes, shoes, handbags, sunglasses and perfumes including well-known brand names such as Calvin Klein, Versace, Oakley and Posh Spice's favourite, Louis Vuitton.
Russell Sharland, senior trading standards officer, said: "Some consumers believe buying counterfeit goods saves money and doesn't do any harm. However, not only is it taking revenue from legitimate local businesses, which can affect jobs, but there are safety risks involved too.
"Counterfeit perfume may well be a cheap Christmas present but the chances are that cheap is exactly how it will smell.
"And, while giving foul-smelling perfume to a loved one for Christmas is unlikely to earn you a kiss under the mistletoe, things could get worse."
Mr Sharland said counterfeit perfume is unlikely to have gone through the rigorous safety testing that the genuine item will have and skin irritation or burns may result.
And counterfeit sunglasses are unlikely to protect the eyes from strong light and UV rays.
But small traders are tempted to make a quick buck by dealing in fake designer gear are given a stark warning.
"Any person convicted of trade marks offences faces a maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment," said Mr Sharland.
"Swindon trading standards staff have a proven track record in cracking down on this type of crime. Our message is that is simply isn't worth it."
Anyone who suspects that counterfeit goods are being sold in Swindon should contact trading standards on Swindon 466155.
