TWO people had to be cut free from the wreckage of their cars after a serious accident on the A4 at Pewsham, Chippenham On Wednesday November 28.

One woman driver was airlifted by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance to Royal United Hospital in Bath with head injuries.

A man was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. A third woman driver was treated at Chippenham Community Hospital.

The accident, involving two cars and a van, happened at about 2.15pm on the A4 outside Pewsham Garage, near Chippenham.

The road was closed between the garage and Derry Hill for over an hour while police investigators took details. Traffic was diverted.

Pewsham Garage owner Tan Hussain said although he and his staff had not actually witnessed the accident, they had heard the noise of the impact.

"We don't often see that many accidents outside the garage. It is a fairly straight piece of road," said Mr Hussain.

"The crash has caused a lot of tailbacks," he said.

"There were very long queues of traffic going right up to Derry Hill and back into Chippenham."

Fire crews from Chippenham were on the scene within minutes and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free one driver from one of the cars.

Firefighters also helped the ambulance paramedics to get another driver out of his car.

Dave Jacombe, sub officer at Chippenham Fire Station said it was a serious accident and one crew from Chippenham and the emergency support unit had been called out.

The accident, which caused chaos to rush hour traffic travelling in and out of Chippenham along the A4, involved a silver Ford Escort, a red Rover and a navy coloured builders' van.

Cars were diverted along the narrow roads through Bowden Hill and Lacock and onto the A350.
