THE hard work and commitment of trainee motor technicians was recognised at an awards ceremony in Devizes.

A total of 38 technicians received certificates after completing their National Vocational Qualifications at the Motor Industry College, on Hopton Industrial Estate.

Four special awards were presented including the most promising NVQ level two trainee of 2001 which was awarded to David Butler, 17, of Melksham.

David Chambers, 22, of Wootton Bassett won the award for the trainee who made the most outstanding progress in 2001.

Mr Chambers' determination to carry on with his work and studies astounded everyone after he suffered multiple injuries in a serious road accident a few years ago.

Pete Vowles, head of automotive studies at the college, said: "He fully deserves a big pat on the back."

Simon Chanin, 22, of Dauntsey, near Lyneham won the award for best body repair/refinishing trainee and Claire Bush, 19, of Corsham won the young technician of the year award.

Mr Vowles said: "Claire shone above a lot of people. She did extremely well and was totally committed."
