PARENTS bidding to lower the speed limit outside a busy secondary school in Melksham have received backing from councillors.

Campaigners are battling to lower the speed limit outside George Ward School, as parents believe their children are being put at risk from speeding motorists.

They have called for the speed limit to be lowered from 40mph to 30mph along the stretch of Bath Road going past the school gates.

Cllr Angie Barker said she supported the calls for a lower speed limit, which would make the area around one of Wiltshire's largest secondary schools much safer.

She said: "It is total madness that the area most used by children walking to and from school is not covered by a 30mph limit.

"Most children use the footway three, and sometimes four, abreast with cyclists on the footway and cyclepath. Safety must come first."
