Trading standards officers are warning people in Wiltshire to be on their guard after receiving worrying reports of salesmen employing underhand tactics to bump up their commission.

Electricity salesmen are reported to have used various ruses to trick homeowners into signing up to a new energy supplier.

After following up on various complaints from the public, trading officers have uncovered some of the methods salesmen have employed in order to obtain the signature they need in order to claim they have attracted a new customer.

Salesmen have told customers stories about company takeovers and pretended a signature is needed in order to continue the electricity supply.

Others have pretended you need to sign to confirm that a reading has been taken or to request further information.

Even though signing up isn't final the law gives customers the right to change their minds realising you have been the subject of a con can be frightening, especially for elderly or more vulnerable people.

Sue Wilkins, a senior adviser at the Wiltshire trading standards office, said: "It is really disgusting that a few salesmen are prepared to stoop to trickery to get a signature.

"If someone calls to read your meter or discuss your energy bills you should ask for a name and tell them to wait outside while you call your supplier.

"Don't be tricked into signing.
