AN ANGRY Warminster man told a court how police officers used CS gas spray to restrain his pregnant wife.

Philip Dicks, 27, of Hillwood Lane, who admitted to being drunk and disorderly in an incident earlier this month, said police officers used the spray on his wife when she tried to free him from handcuffs.

Julia Dicks, 34, appeared with her husband at North West Wiltshire Magistrates' Court in Trowbridge, admitting charges of resisting and assaulting Warminster officer James Suter.

Prosecutor Richard Thomas told the court police spotted Mr Dicks being restrained by another man outside the John Barleycorn pub in Weymouth Street.

Ignoring their requests to leave the area he eventually walked towards High Street before returning to confront a woman, whom he had argued with earlier.

Handcuffing one of his hands, PC Suter noticed Mrs Dicks coming towards him, trying to pull her husband away.

PC Suter used the CS gas on Mr Dicks and was then attacked by his furious wife.

Mr Dicks told the court that his wife had been sprayed with CS gas, despite being pregnant.

He said: "She was pregnant and they threw her to the floor and sprayed CS gas in her face."

Magistrates ordered Mr Dicks to pay an £80 fine and £50 costs.

Mrs Dicks received a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £30 towards costs.
