I am writing in response to CR & CA Hillman's letter headed Cars blocked emergency routes (Wiltshire Times, November 16).
It was the first time I had attempted to attend a fireworks display in Trowbridge, having recently moved to the area. My children are both quite young and it was their first ever firework display. We had friends and family over for the evening after promising them an excellent firework display.
I had read about the shuttle bus from town and thought that would be a splendid idea and save us all having to drive.
When we arrived for the bus I was surprised to see such a long queue but thought a large coach would be along shortly to take us there. We waited and a tiny little minibus arrived, we quickly calculated it would need at least six trips to get us all there and assumed the minibus was the backup for the coach. We waited for the minibus to return, and were informed by the official they had delayed the start by 15 minutes to ensure we got there. We were debating whether to walk but decided as this was an advertised service they would get us there in plenty of time.
When the coach finally arrived to pick us up after clearing the rest of the line, it was very late, but the official informed us if we got on the bus now we would just miss the start. We had been waiting for over an hour so thought we may as well catch some of the fireworks.
Well, needless to say we missed the lot. We sat on the bus for over an hour while cars piled out of Green Lane Estate. It was appalling, so I sympathise with the letter writer last week, but my solution is NOT for people to use the shuttle service or drive. It would be easier to walk! This is what I will do next year, when I hope my children will finally see their first firework display.
