FORGET bridge and gardening physics is the new must-do for Swindon's older generation.

A Physics for Fun event for senior citizens has been run by Vernon Griffiths, a retired Head of Physics teacher from New College and a member of the Swindon University of the Third Age (U3A).

The ten-week course, which was timetabled between September and November, was based at the New College site at Walcot on Thursday between 4pm and 6pm.

It attracted an equal amount of men and women, some of whom were aged over 80.

The course was set up to bring people up to date with their physics knowledge, and give them a chance to use some of the apparatus.

Norma Hall, 65, a retired nurse, said: "It has been very interesting. I didn't understand much about physics while I was at school, and the course has helped me to understand different areas better. I now know how radio works for the first time, but I know I'm never going to be a physicist."

The final lesson was carried out yesterday. The lesson finished with a presentation of certificates by Martin Keating, deputy head of New College.

The certificates were to congratulate course members on their attendance.

Vivian Roberts 80, a retired engineer, said: "I have enjoyed the course a great deal. "It has been exciting, particularly as we were allowed to use the equipment.

It was all hands on, and we were giving the chance to experiment with different areas." Course leader Mr Griffiths said: "The course was very successful. I got a real buzz from the students when they said thank you, because they said it with such enthusiasm.

I feel proud to have taught each and every one of the students. "The course was not a trivial one. It was full of enjoyment, and hands on experiences. "It has been very practical, and it has allowed people the chance to update their physics knowledge."
