ADAM WILLIS could find himself the long term beneficiary if his defensive colleagues keep incurring the wrath of referees.
The 25-year-old central defender has struggled to force himself into the first team picture but he is almost certain to start this afternoon's game with Wigan Athletic.
Suspension to Razor Ruddock means Willis steps in alongside Matt Heywood and Andy Gurney.
Although Willis has only managed two starts this year, one of which was at right wing back, he has a real opportunity to shine during December.
While Ruddock is out today, 10 bookings for Andy Gurney means he will miss Town's next two games.
That gives Willis the chance to really make an impression.
He said: "Obviously I would have been happier playing more games this year but I think the gaffer has his favoured three.
"I suppose you could say I'm the fourth defender who steps in when one of the others is out, but as a professional you aren't going to be happy with that situation indefinitely.
"But I'm not the sort of player who goes knocking on the manager's door and moaning.
"All you can do is continue to work hard in training.
"I'd like to think I haven't let anyone down when I've come in.
"I don't think it's a question of having to prove myself. I've been at the club a while and I believe I can do a job if given a chance."
Director of football Roy Evans has no worries about turning to Willis.
Evans said: "Adam has done well when he has come in and his attitude is first class. He is a willing listener."
The letter 'w' seems something of a lucky charm for Willis.
His two most notable performances in the last couple of seasons came at Wycombe. Now he gets his chance at Wigan.
He said: "Wigan's home record isn't great but they still have some very good players and we'll have to be at our best."
This afternoon's match is also another chance for an old boys' reunion.
Willis was at Coventry with Wigan striker Simon Howarth before the pair went their separate ways.
Howarth has already blasted 10 goals for the Latics this season and Willis knows his old mate will be a real handful.
He said: "Simon has already scored quite a few this year and I'm pleased to see him doing well.
"But we'll be working hard to keep him quiet."
A reminder that this afternoon's fixture at the JJB Stadium is pay on the day. Ticket prices are as follows: £13 (adults) and £8 (juniors).
