A CAMPAIGN has been launched to attract new members to a wheelchair basketball club, thanks to a grant from Oxford, Swindon and Gloucester Co-op.
The £1,000 Co-op community dividend grant has been awarded to Swindon Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club to design, print and circulate leaflets and posters promoting its activities.
The aim is to raise awareness among disability groups and the local community to boost membership and revenue. Swindon Kings was formed in January 2001 and meets every Saturday from 11.30am-12.30pm at the Haydon Centre.
There is a core of disabled attendees who attend regularly but more are needed to to make the club sustainable. Gladys Barr, Sports Development Officer for Swindon Borough Council, who helps run the club says: "Several of our members have said they need literature to hand out to disabled people when they meet them. Now that the club is up and running, we need to tell more people about it so they can join in the fun and secure the future of the club."
