THE Korean war ended in a ceasefire in 1953, during the year 2003 the 50th anniversary of the ending of the war will be celebrated by the members of the BKVA all over the country through the local branches.
A national event is to be laid on by the MoD in London. The highlight of this will be a service held in Westminster Abbey and a march past. The person taking the salute is yet not known.
During the Korean conflict the UK casualties were 1078 killed 2674 wounded, 1060 prisoners of war of which 50 died in captivity.
My reason for writing to you is to ask if you will support us in increasing the membership of the local branch by printing the story of the branch.
The branch was started four years ago by three founder members to save local veterans from travelling to either Gloucester or Reading. This meant a journey of over 35 miles each way. Sadly we have lost two of the founder members through death.
The membership of the branch has reached 58, our aim is reach a membership of 100 by the year 2003. We hope through your goodness we will achieve this target.
Any member of the services who served in Korea either during the war or in the peacekeeping force is entitled to join the association, also members of their families can join as associate members.
Further details can be obtained from the secretary, telephone 01793 721837 or by writing to the above address.
