BATH and the surrounding areas boast some remarkable charity shops. Mantovani Moments takes a regular look at just what the eagle-eyed bargain hunter can snap up in these modern-day Aladdin's caves. This week, the Scope shop in High Street, Keynsham.
Anything for my bookshelf? Most definitely. In fact, a very well rounded collection of books, ranging from the usual Jackie Collins collection to a copy of William Golding's masterful The Inheritors.
Most of the books, both hard and paperbacked, are priced around the 50p mark, and there's no question the shop boasts one of the most impressive libraries of second-hand books. Hell, a novelisation of ET: The Extra-Terrestrial was even unearthed.
Anything for my stereo? Ah...now this is where it gets embarrassing. Having been so pleasantly impressed by the quality of its cut-price literature, you can't help but feel:
a. disappointed, saddened and disturbed by the musical choices on offer
b. elated that it is still possible to buy music of such dire extremes.
For instance, on the one hand, you can pick up a pristine copy of Clap, Clap Party Accordion (80p), including such classic accordion hits as The Chicken Song, Dancing in Paris and Nellie the Elephant. And by the way, it's for adults.
Alternatively, if serious music is more your style, then The Compact Selection of National Anthems of The World (80p) might be more up your street. Anthems include those of Albania, Greece, Liechtenstein and China (the People's Republic).
Any videos? The usual fare of workouts and karate blockbusters were nowhere to be seen.
Worth visiting? Absolutely. This smart, little shop in Keynsham's picturesque High Street is a genuine discovery.
