AHHH Italy. Home of organised crime, bad drivers and pizza. Well, it had to have something going for it, and in Bath you can enjoy some of the magic of the true, authentic pizza experience by dining out at Pizza Express in Barton Street.

The real jewel in this restaurant's crown however are its toilets. Plain and simple to be sure, but divinely elegant and as much a part of the dining process as the huge black pepper mills used by staff to intimidate the cocky and smug diner.

It takes a lot to impress the Bath Star toilet crew, but Pizza Express's contribution to civilised lavatorial living is a shining testament to just what can be achieved with a little effort and a bottle of Domestos.

Open times: Same as restaurant

Number of urinals (Gents): Two and very white, too

Number of cubicles (Gents): One

Number of Cubicles (Ladies): Two

Drying facilities: One towel roll in both Ladies and Gents

Bouquet: A vase or bouquet of fresh flowers in both washrooms. Almost unheard of in a high street pizza chain. Very impressive.

Cleanliness: Excellent. Not spotless, as you should expect, but very impressive nonetheless.

Lighting: Bright yet somehow low-key. Almost romantic in an Armitage Shanks (toilet makers since 1817) kind of way.

Mirror: On reflection, even the palest of souls will look tanned and healthy after glimpsing in these

Decor: Very Mediterranean. Like an enclosed piazza with urinals

Worth visiting: As much as the restaurant itself. Indeed, the Bath Star was advised to take the plunge after receiving a tip-off from an enormously impressed reader. Could easily have eaten our American Hot in the Gents cubicle while enjoying the elegant ambience of these fine conveniences.
