FAMILIES living in two cul-de-sacs, who say they have had enough of the nightmare of speeding traffic racing to nearby domestic garages, are campaigning for road speed humps.

More than 30 residents in Westminster Gardens and in nearby Parliament Street, Chippenham, have signed a petition calling for urgent traffic calming measures.

Mother-of-two Sarah Hackett, 33, of Westminster Gardens, said her concerns about speeding traffic had increased over the last few months.

"I have lived here for eight or nine years but the traffic has certainly got worse in the last few months," she said.

"In the summer when the children were playing outside it was a worry. I could just see there was going to be an accident. It is the speed of the traffic rather than the volume."

Mrs Hackett approached Chippenham town and North Wiltshire district councillor Nina Phillips to urge her to put forward people's increasing concern.

The residents want to see a No Through Road signs, double yellow lines and three speed humps installed.

Mrs Phillips has written to Coun Bill Wood, chairman of the town council's planning and environment committee, asking that the matter be placed on the committee's agenda.

"There are many children who live and play in Westminster Gardens and their parents and others are concerned about the very real danger of a child being maimed or killed due to speeding cars going to and from the garages there," said Coun Phillips.

Mrs Hackett's son Brandon, eight, has severe learning difficulties and is wheelchair bound. She said: "I am obviously in control of his chair but it is even more difficult to get across the road safely. I just want to do something before anything bad happens."

Elderly people in Westminster Gardens are also worried by the speeding traffic.
