A DISABLED Amesbury man says he is not being fed properly, due to the strain on social services' resources.

Gary Midgley (32), of the Haywain, suffers from Ramsey Hunt syndrome, a neurological condition that means he is wheelchair-bound and needs help getting dressed and cooking his meals.

A social worker comes to his bungalow each morning and evening but only has enough time to make him a microwave meal each day.

Mr Midgley has asked for an extra hour of care but has been told the maximum he can expect is another 30 minutes.

His condition is progressive so he needs more care every year, but he says he has always had to fight tooth and nail for extra help.

"All I want are the basic things," he said. "I just want to be fed properly and not have to eat microwave food every day of the week."

Mr Midgley went to school in Tidworth and has lived in Ludgershall for most of his life. He was diagnosed with Ramsey Hunt syndrome in 1992.

"It is a combination of neurological diseases, including Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis," he said. "I have various other complications and it is getting worse. I do have great difficulty getting around."

Mr Midgley said he did not blame staff working at Wiltshire County Council's social services for the difficulty in providing him with extra care.

"My social worker has been brilliant, but it is the system that is letting me down," he added.
