AN exhibition at Devizes Town Hall next week will unveil proposals for new allotments at Windsor Drive to replace those at Spitalcroft where developers want to build up to 120 houses.

A plan by Pippin Homes to build at Spitalcroft, off London Road, was thrown out by Kennet District Council and lost its appeal at a subsequent public inquiry because the 12-acre site at Windsor Drive was considered unsatisfactory as a replacement for the 70 allotments, which people were evicted from last year.

Now Robert Hitchins Ltd is planning to build on Spitalcroft and has commissioned environmental consultants Fieldfare Associates, of Taunton, to draw up a plan which would make the Windsor Drive site more acceptable to former Spitalcroft allotment holders and town councillors.

The plans are for a community area that will attract disabled people and schoolchildren as well allotment holders.

As well as 107 allotments, the new scheme includes an area for cars and bicycles and a community lodge which will house toilets, washrooms and a combined meeting room and classroom.

Access to the site will be along a byway at the opposite side to Windsor Drive.

The exhibition is on Thursday, December 13, from 11.30am to 2.30pm and 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Tony Larpent, of Fieldfare Associates, said: "These plans are just suggestions for people to comment on. We don't want to force anything on people."
