Neighbours at Waylands in Devizes are vying with each other to produce the best show of Christmas lights in the street.

Jenny Hughes, at number 39, has a dazzling array including a Christmas candle and Santa Claus among flashing chaser lights and winking angels,.

John and Julia King across the road at number 22 boast a huge Star of Bethlehem and well as Santa and his sleigh.

Mrs Hughes said: "We done this for the last two years. I just love Christmas and I know that John and Julie feel the same.

"It is a good-natured contest that we have. Nothing underhand, but we just keep our eyes on each others' displays. I've just bought three more sets of lights which my sons Paul and Philip will put up tomorrow.

"We really started off doing it for the kids. I have three grandchildren, Hope, six, Charlie, three, and eight-month-old George. They just love the lights."

Mrs Hughes is also known for the girth of her six-year-old tomcat, Tubby. The two have just appeared on the This Morning programme on ITV and have featured in articles in the national press.

Tubby weighs in at 25lbs but, according to Mrs Hughes, he is not a big eater. She said: "The trouble is he's lazy. He spends all day just lying around.
