I HAVE read with interest the continuing series of articles concerning the doubts over the future of RAF Lyneham over the past few weeks.
As an RAF serviceman I am naturally dismayed at the thought that yet another airfield might be forced to close, and I have been heartened by the support shown in the pages of the Gazette and Herald.
However, imagine my surprise when reading the article on page seven of the November 9 issue, which stated that the airfield here at Colerne was no longer used by the RAF.
This is incorrect, as Colerne re-opened as an RAF airfield in 1993, as those who complain about the minimal noise generated will no doubt testify.
Since then, Colerne has been the home of Bristol University Air Squadron and Number Three Air Experience Flight.
These units fly the Grob "Tutor" light aircraft in the elementary flying training and air experiences role respectively.
Furthermore, if you were to check your facts further, I believe that you may find there is no permanent regular RAF presence at Hullavington or Kemble these days either.
Unfortunately, Mr Moran in his letter on page eight was slightly mistaken as well, as the Army unit with whom we share the site (and a lot of goodwill) at Colerne 21st Signals Regiment (Air Support) is very much an operational unit not a training one.
Please do continue to give your support to the cause, but a thorough checking of facts might just lend more weight to our argument.
