WOOTON Bassett United and Swin-don Eagles take centre stage this weekend in the top-of-the-table clash at Ballards Ash.

Both the Wilts Junior League sides are unbeaten so far this season, the Eagles losing their 100 per cent record in their last league game against Marlborough Town Reserves.

Bassett, on 34 points off 12 games, are just two short of the maximum. The Eagles have 37 points from 14 games.

Mark Herring, manager of the Eagles, said: "We always have a close game with Wootton Bassett. They are a good side but somehow we always seem to finish on top. Earlier in the season we were trailing 2-1 in the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup against them, but equalised in the last couple of minutes, and then scored the winner in extra time.

"We'll have three of our regular first teamers in Richard Purcell, Gary Hogg and Curtis Arnold, not available through suspensions, but we are hoping we can come out on top once again."

Kenny Regan and his Bassett side have been looking forward to the fixture for some time and are hopeful they can gain revenge for the cup defeat earlier in the season.

He said: "We had the tie sewn up with a few minutes to go, but let them back in. Our lads will be trying hard to avenge the defeat."

Also in the Junior section Wroughton Reserves, who lead the table by five points, face a tricky visit to Bromham, but should run out winners and add to their goals scored tally, the highest in all three divisions.

Wroughton's senior side have another chance to peg back Shrewton United's lead at the top of the Premier Division table, when they entertain Melksham Town Reserves at the Weir Field.

Shrewton, without a game, lead the table by 11 points from second-placed Trowbridge, with Wroughton in fourth spot, 15 points adrift but with four games in hand.

If the Swindon side can continue to win their games in hand, they could be serious challengers for the title. Chris Pethick's side are enjoying a good run, with their sharpshooter Glenn Armstrong providing his share of the goals.

Cricklade Town will have to start winning soon if they are to pull away from the bottom of the table, but once again they look to be up against it, at home to Trowbridge Town.

The visitors, with their happy band of followers to urge them on, know it is crucial to pick up three points if they are to keep the leaders on their toes.

Intermediate leaders Blunsdon United, who beat their nearest rivals Zarlink last weekend, travel to Calne and should be too strong for the home side.

Zarlink take on Biddestone Reserves at Kingsdown in the second round of the Plaister Autos Cup, and Stratton Crosslink Reserves take on Castrol in the same competition.
