West Wiltshire District Council is has won seven awards at the Cannon Hygiene Loo of the Year competition.

Six local toilets were awarded four out of a possible five stars the highest number possible for an unattended facility.

The Bath Road toilets in Melksham received three stars missing out on a fourth because it lacks a baby changing area.

The council is attributing its success to an 18-month programme of upgrades carried out by their partners, the private contractor InterPublic.

Work carried out included refurbishing interiors, introducing anti-vandal measures, improving access for cleaning and making facilities easier to find.

The council's cabinet spokesman for service delivery, Cllr Horace Prickett, said: "I am delighted that these efforts have been recognised on a national level."

The award-winning facilities are at the station car park in Bradford-on-Avon, on Church Street and in the Town Square in Melksham, in the central car park in Warminster and on the High Street and Warminster Road in Westbury.

Sixty six local authorities, as well as pubs, museums and motorway service stations entered the competition, which was organised by the British Toilet Association.

The council's services manager, Cliff Carter, said: "Next year InterPublic are hoping to enter all nine of the council's facilities into the competition."
