FOR years, we've seen the 4wd Subaru Impreza steering its way through the UK's big Network Q rally as it did just a couple of weeks ago with driver Richard Burns (inset) taking the big honours.
But the Impreza's sporting successes have never really pushed the brand to the forefront of sporting cars. It has continued as a minority choice for those who really know the one to choose.
Now the title-winning WRX basis of the car we saw roaring to victory through the rough tracks and forests is being re-launched in a shattering 261bhp road-going version.
As ever, it will boast Subaru's trade-mark four-wheel drive which is of benefit to everyday motorists as well as cross-country rally drivers.
This ultimate Impreza WRX the STi will be in showrooms in January, priced from £25,995 on (or off) the road.
The six-speed road rocket top speed 148mph, 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds was first unveiled in Frankfurt in September.
For UK drivers, two versions will now be offered the 'standard' STi and the special edition STi Prodrive Style with Prodrive spoilers, grille and front bumper.
Both will be badged Type UK, to reflect the additional features standard on the British versions.
These include a special satellite tracking system and enhanced rust-proofing to cope with UK weather!
As you might expect with such a target for thieves, the STi gets a top-grade alarm/immobiliser and locking wheel nuts.
Up to 80 per cent of the STi's all-alloy engine is new compared to the standard turbo-charged 2.0-litre four-can 'boxer' unit which powers the regular WRX.
Extensive modifications by Subaru's motor sport division aim to combine the utmost durability, performance and throttle response with the fuel economy, noise and emission levels expected of a road car.
The STi's power rating of 265 PS dwarfs the standard WRX's figures of 218PS from its 2.0-litre engine.
But for road users, fuel economy is still important and the STi promises virtually 30mpg on the extra-urban cycle.
The sixth gear is not an economy-orientated overdrive. Instead it has low gearing to keep up its lively acceleration.
The STi's fourth gear matches third on the WRX.
