DEFINITE public response shows massive support for the campaign to keep the records office in Trowbridge.
Evidence shows Trowbridge is the most accessible location in Wiltshire by public transport, which is centred geographically in the middle of the large crescent-shaped, more densely populated area of Wiltshire and Swindon and in which most of the towns are located. This is the very reason it became the county town in the first place.
This remains the very reason why it is necessary to Wiltshire as a whole and not just to Trowbridge that in the county town is where it stays. This status as county town is not in jeopardy, we hope! But unlike many towns at this time, the biggest employer in Trowbridge, Virgin Mobile, is actually increasing the number of workers it employs. Developers are interested in working with the town.
Trowbridge is increasingly seen as a very significant retail (recent statistics have shown a 20 per cent take up of town centre retail outlets) and employment centre.
This is a time of opportunity.
The public are very welcome to sign the petition, which is in HB Pitt Ltd in Silver Street, to show that we are fighting to keep the records office in Trowbridge.
ANN MASON,
President of the Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce.
