A NEW COLLEGE student is hoping to give young scholars in Africa a lift by organising an appeal for a parachute.

Rosa Campbell Blight, 16, of Croft Road, was one of the past and present Commonweal School students who took part in a highly successful visit to Gunjur in the Gambia in November.

The Swindon group borrowed a parachute from local charity Home Start for the trip, and found it was a big hit with Gunjur's ill-equipped primary school students, who used it for a wide range of games.

"The fun is in the movement of the parachute," said Rosa.

"The children we met in the Gambia had never seen a parachute before our visit and they had probably never imagined anything like it.

"They were fascinated and delighted by the games and just simply the colours of the parachute."

Home Start needed the parachute to come back to England with the Commonweal girls, but Rosa is now determined to find another to send to the Gambia students.

She would like to hear from anyone who can provide one, or anyone who knows someone who could do so, on Swindon 641615.

"It would make a great gift for these children to remember us by," she said.
