AN FA Cup exit at the hands of Hereford would be unthinkable for David Duke as it would jeopardise his starting role.

The 23-year-old has almst been an ever present member of Roy Evans' side his versatility crucial to Town being used as wing-back on both the left and right flanks.

The only blip in the season so far was the Scotsman's dismissal against Cardiff City.

But he bounced straight back after a one-match ban and has not missed a game since the 1-0 defeat at Blackpool.

While he is thrilled to be a 'regular' Duke knows his position is now under threat. Both Paul Edwards and Sol Davis are itching to take Duke's place should he falter.

He said: "I'm very determined to stay in the team. I know there is competition for my place but the only way I can keep the others at arms length is to keep putting together decent performances."

The Scotsman knows competition is healthy for a club but he does not want to be the one fighting to oust the man in possession of the journey.

He said: "Personally, I know a good performance is important against Hereford. But as a team we have to be professional and make sure we do what is required to get into the hat for the third round draw.

"We avoided a cup upset in the last round and we want to make sure we avoid it again. They have nothing to lose and having already put out a league side they have to be treated with respect.

"But we played a non-league side in the second round last year and our approach that day was just right.

"The lads are all very positive and a good cup run would give everyone a lift ahead of the busy Christmas programme."

Tickets are now on sale for next Saturday's home game with Huddersfield Town.

The match sees the return of former Town boss Lou Macari.
